About Medu Vada:

Medu vada is a South Indian fritter made from Vigna mungo. It is usually made in a doughnut shape, with a crispy exterior and soft interior. A popular food item in South Indian, Sri Lankan Tamil cuisines, it is generally eaten as a breakfast or a snack.

Medu Vada has different names according to different regions including ulundu vadai (Tamil terminology), uzhunnu vada (Malayalam terminology), garelu (Telugu terminology), urad vada and medhu vadai.

This dish became popular in Maharashtra as introduced by quite a few Udupi restaurateurs. Eventually, vadas became popular all over India.

Ingredients :

  • 2 cups urad dal
  • 1 tbsp black peppercorns crushed
  • 2 spring curry leaves chopped
  • 1/3 cup grated coconut
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for deep frying
  • Water

How To Make Medu Vada with step by step :

  1. Soak the urad dal overnight.
  2. Drain the water, blend urad dal in a mixture to make a smooth batter. Add water if needed. Batter looks fluffy after blending.
  3. Transfer the batter to a bowl. Add black peppercorns crushed, 2 spring curry leaves chopped, 1/3 cup grated coconut, Salt as per the taste. Mix it properly.
  4. In a kadai heat oil.
  5. Apply some water to both your hands. Take portion of batter in your palm give it a proper shape and make a hole in center by using your thumb.
  6. Gently slide of the vada in a hot oil. Deep fry the medu vada till it turn golden in color.
  7. Serve the medu vada with chutney or sambar.
